暑い…暑い…ある意味“熱い”日本の夏も、そろそろ終わりに近付き、秋の気配がチラホラ。
あっと言う間の夏でしたが、皆さんいかがお過ごしでしたか？
僕は会社のみんなでビアガーデンに行ったり、
地元の花火大会を満喫したり、それなりに季節を満喫できたと思います。

さて、大変長らくお待たせしました。

今回は「ボストン滞在記　後編」をお送りします。
前回の記事で訪れたワシントンD.C.を後にし、ついにボストンの地に足を踏み入れます。

ワシントンD.C.を堪能した僕たち一行は、二日目の夕方にボストンへ移動しました。
ロナルド・レーガン・ワシントン・ナショナル空港からジェネラル・エドワード・ローレンス・ローガン国際空港まで、約２時間のフライト。
上空から自然や街並みを眺め、機内で次回作の構想などを練っているとあっという間に到着。

アクセスゲームズを立ち上げてから、早１０年──
「飛行機で、異国の地を移動しながら、次回作の構想を練る。」
こんな現実が訪れるとは…改めて文字に起こすと自分でも“寒く”なりますね。

ローガン国際空港に到着後は、ちょっとした荷物トラブルに巻き込まれつつも、無事に荷物を奪還。
空港内を色々と撮影しました。
ロビーだけでなく、建物外観や、滑走路、ビル屋上からの景色など…
いつもなら空港に着いたらすぐにホテルへ向かうのに、この日は空港内で一仕事。
しかもワシントンＤ．Ｃ．での取材からぶっ通しだったので、もう、ヘトヘトでした。

ホテルに着く頃には、睡魔に襲われ僕は夕食をキャンセルしてベッドへ直行。
気がつくと、もう夢の中でした。
なんだか、とてもワクワクする夢をみた気がします。

こんにちは、ボストン！

ボストンでの滞在期間は、たったの５日間。
余裕があるわけじゃないのに、前半は天候が思わしくありません。
僕は仕方なく小雨が降る中、カメラを片手にボストンの街中を巡ることに。
ただ、（日本の皆さんにはピンと来ないかも知れませんが）ボストンの雨は降ってもすぐにやみます。
なので、傘を差している人もすくなく、ジョギング中の人なんか、雨の中そのままジョギングを継続。
梅雨時期にズボンの裾まで、ビショビショになる日本では考えられません。

そんなこんなで、雨が降っても取材、撮影は概ね順調に進んだのであります。

ここボストンもワシントンD.C.同様に、緑化に取り組まれており、街中に緑が溢れています。
なので、街のあちこちでリスや小鳥などに出会い、心が癒されます。こういうの大事だな。日本も真似しましょうよ。
また、アメリカの中でも歴史ある街なので、古い建造物や町並みが残されており、史跡も多い。
日本で言うと京都とかかな？町屋通りに舞妓はん。みたいなのを想像してもらえれば、と思います。
いままで見てきたアメリカとはひと味ちがっていて、カメラを持つ手にも力が入りました。

でも、翌日内部まで見せてくれました。感謝！
JFK生家：ベンチに見えるのは地元のカップルかな？
MIT：ケンブリッジ市にある名門大学。珍しい形をした建物ですね。
ハーバード大学：こちらも同市にある名門大学。
この市が「世界最高峰の学びのテーマパーク」と呼ばれる所以ですね。

今回の取材では、途中で現職の警察官の方とお話をする機会がありました。
色々な情報（犯罪の種類や、ランキング、警察官のお給料まで）をインタビューしましたが、中でも面白かったのがドーナツの話。
この街では警察官がリスペクトされているので、お店のはからいでコーヒーとドーナツは無料でもらえるそうです。
映画で見たことある、アレ…本当だったんですね。
あとは、昔、日本でやっていた「Dunkin' Donuts」ＴＶＣＭで、警察官がカーチェイスの途中で、ドーナツ屋に立ち寄るというのがありましたが、その話を思い出しました。
　※ちなみに「Dunkin' Donuts」はマサチューセッツ州、クインシーが発祥とのこと。

あと、管理職（警部補以上）になると、警察署から特別にスマートフォンが支給されるらしく、対応してくださった警部補の方が自慢げに話していました。
クリアな会話にデータの送受信も出来るので便利なんだって。
なるほど、こういうのは現地で話を聞かないと出てこない情報だ。

ヨーク捜査官も、そろそろ携帯をスマートフォンに持ち替えているだろうか？
まあ、グリーンベイルには携帯の電波が届いていないんだけれども。

途中迷子になってヘトヘト…、こんな時はドーナツでエネルギー補給だ！

ボストン公立図書館：アメリカ最古の公立図書館。
ボストンシティホール：今日は何もやってないのかな～？
ボストン美術館：世界有数の規模を誇る美術館。
アメリカ独立100周年にあたる1876年に開館したそうです。

バンカーヒル記念塔へ。フリーダムトレイルの終点です。

ボストン滞在が後半を迎えた辺りから天候が回復。
今まで、行った場所も快晴なら、どんな風景になっているのか？ともう一度訪れ、
晴れるまで取材を控えていた場所にも、時間をやりくりして訪れ、僕は残り時間を惜しむように、街中を駆け回りました。

最終日はトラムを使って移動しました。（それまではロケ車だった）
ワシントンＤ．Ｃ．のメトロや、日本の地下鉄とはまた異なった仕組み、車体なので新鮮だ。

夕方近くには埠頭まで足を伸ばし、ボストンの街並みを眺めた…。
今回の旅でも、沢山の場所へ行き、多くの人達に出会った。
西海岸と比べ、東海岸独特のアクセントがあってコミュニケーションに
苦労したけども、毎日が楽しく新鮮で、良い経験になったのは言うまでもない。
すべてのことに感謝したいです。

ワシントンＤ．Ｃ．とボストンの二つの都市に足を運んだ今回のアメリカ訪問。
この意味を皆さんにご報告できるのは何時になるか。楽しみにお待ちください。

My Stay in Boston, Part 2

This is Swery, Director at Access Games.


Hot... So hot... Japanese summers are hot in more ways than one, but we’re almost reaching the end of this year’s summer, and autumn is already rearing its dreary head.
How did you spend your summer, everyone?
I’ve visited Beer Gardens with my colleagues, watched the local fireworks displays and enjoyed most of what there is to enjoy about this wonderful season.

Right, sorry for the long intro.
Today, I bring you “My Stay in Boston, Part 2.”
Last time I wrote about my adventures in Washington D.C., but this time I’m going to tell you about my trip to Boston.

After a great stay in Washington D.C., our party traveled to Boston on the evening of the second day. The flight from Ronald Reagan Washington National Airport to General Edward Lawrence Logan International Airport took about 2 hours.
As I stared out the window at the nature and the towns, and as I polished the plot for my next game inside the plane, we arrived at our destination before we knew it.

It’s already been 10 years since Access Games was founded.
Who ever thought I would be here, in a plane, traveling around a foreign country, polishing the plot for my next game? Writing it down like this kind of gives me goose bumps.

After arriving at Logan International Airport, we got involved with a small problem regarding our luggage, but we safely managed to steal back what belonged to us.
I took lots of pictures around the airport.
Not just the lobby, but also the building itself, the runways, the view from the roof, etc...
I always tend to go straight to my hotel when arriving at the airport, but I felt like doing some work first today.
I had been working continuously since collecting data in Washington D.C., so I was completely worn out.

When I arrived at the hotel, the sandman got the best of me, so I canceled dinner and went straight to bed.
Before I knew it, I was in dreamland.
I think I had a pretty nice dream too.

Hi, Boston!

I was only going to stay in Boston for 5 days.
I didn’t have a lot of time, but the weather during the first half of the trip was hardly ideal.
Trying my best to ignore the drizzle, I decided to head into town, holding my camera in one hand.
However, (and this may be a bit hard to imagine for people from other countries) the rain in Boston tends to let up almost immediately after it has started.
So there were very few people carrying umbrellas and people who were jogging just kept on jogging as if nothing had happened.
This would never happen during the rainy season in Japan, because the legs of your trousers would become soaking wet.

Anyway, even with the rain, my data collecting activities progressed favorably.

Like Washington D.C., Boston has lots of green and there are plants and trees everywhere throughout the city.
So there were also lots of little birds and squirrels all over the place, creating a very soothing atmosphere. This kind of thing is really important. Japan should learn from this.
This city has a long history, so there are plenty of old buildings and streets, and even historical sites.
It’s kind of like Kyoto, with its townhouse streets and apprentice geisha. Only different.
It was quite unlike the America I had seen so far, so I started flexing my camera hand.

Boston Police Department: I just walked in and asked if I could take some pictures,
but I was turned down... But they showed me around the building the following day. Thanks!
JFK’s house: Is that a local couple on that bench over there?
MIT: A famous university in Cambridge. It has a very peculiar shape.
Harvard University: Another famous university in the same city.
This is why they call this place the “World’s Biggest Theme Park for Studying.”

As part of my data collecting activities, I got to talk to a real police officer.
I interviewed him about many different things (such as rankings and types of crime, and even what the average officer gets paid), but the most interesting thing he told me about were the donuts.
Police officers are really respected in this city, so some stores offer them free coffee and donuts.
So yes, all those movies you’ve seen? They’re actually true.
A long while ago, there was a TV commercial for “Dunkin’ Donuts” in Japan in which a police officer interrupts a car chase to visit a Donut shop, and I was reminded of this while talking to the officer.
　*Apparently “Dunkin’ Donuts” originated from Quincy, Massachusetts.

Also, an assistant police inspector told me proudly that once you become part of management (assistant police inspector or higher), the police department grants you a smartphone.
He said it allowed them to send and receive data as well as maintain clear conversations.
This is the kind of info you only get when you talk to people on the spot.

I wonder if Agent York has switched to a smartphone as well by now?
Not that he’d get reception in Greenvale.

I got lost along the way and I was dead tired...
Time to replenish energy with a donut!

Boston Public Library: The oldest public library in America.
Boston City Hall: Not much going on today, I suppose.
Boston Museum: One of the most prominent museums in the world.
It was opened in 1876, 100 years after the declaration of independence.

During the second half of my stay in Boston, the weather cleared up.
I really wanted to know what the places I had already visited would look like under clear weather, so I went there again and I arranged some time to visit the places I had held out on visiting until the weather got better, so I was running around the city without wasting any time.

On the last day I went around by tram. (I’d been using a location car so far)
The Washington D.C. Metro and the subway in Japan have very different systems and cars, so it was a refreshing experience.

When it was almost evening, I walked to the pier to stare at Boston’s townscape...
This trip has brought me to lots of places and introduced me to many people.
The East Coast has a different accent from the West Coast, so I had some trouble communicating, but needless to say, every day was a fresh new experience.
I’m very grateful for everything.

My trip to America brought me to Washington D.C. and Boston this time.
I wonder when the time will come when I can reveal the meaning behind this.
